🌴 Mahima – History 🌴
The eighth form of Maa Durga is called ‘Mahagauri’. She is highly revered, and her beauty is compared to jasmine flowers, conch shells and the moon. She is described as being eight years old (Ashtavarshabhavedgauri). The clothes and ornaments she wears radiate brilliant light.
Mahagauri is depicted with four arms (Chaturbhuja) and is associated with the lion as her vehicle (Simhavahana). One of her right hands displays the Abhaya Mudra, while the other holds a trident. One of her left hands holds a Damaru, and the other displays the Varada Mudra. Her expressions and gestures convey peace and reassurance.
In her incarnation as Parvati, she performed severe penance to attain Lord Parameswara as her husband. Her vow is expressed in the words: “Vriyeham Varadam Shambhum Naanyam Devam Maheshwaraat” (Narada Pancharatra), meaning that she desired Lord Shambhu and no other deity as her husband. The great poet Tulsidas also describes her determination to attain Lord Shiva.

Due to her severe penance, her body became extremely weak and darkened. Pleased with her devotion, Lord Shiva purified her body with Gangajal. As a result, her complexion became radiant and white, shining like brilliant light. From then on, she became known as ‘Mahagauri’.
According to another story, Parameshwari was born with a dark complexion. Lord Parameswara once playfully called her ‘Kali’. She then performed severe penance to please Lord Brahma. She shed her dark complexion and became ‘Mahagauri’, with a fair complexion matching the radiance of Lord Shiva.
The glory of Mahagauri, the eighth Shakti, is described in the Sri Devi Bhagavatam. Her name inspires thoughts of goodness and righteous conduct. She is known as Sarvavidha Shubhankari, the bestower of all auspiciousness.
Mahagauri Upasana is performed with devotion on the eighth day of Durga Navaratri. Her divine energy is considered powerful and fruitful.
Devotees believe that worshipping Mahagauri cleanses their impurities and destroys the effects of past sins. They seek her blessings for purification, spiritual progress and freedom from future suffering.
Through meditation, remembrance and worship of Maa Mahagauri, devotees seek various divine blessings. We should always meditate upon her. By the grace of the Goddess, devotees believe they can attain extraordinary spiritual accomplishments. By concentrating the mind and serving her feet with unwavering devotion, seekers can overcome their sufferings.
Through the influence of her Upasana, even seemingly impossible tasks may become possible. Therefore, devotees should always take refuge at her feet. Her glories are described in the Puranas. She guides the minds and actions of seekers away from the wrong path and towards righteousness. It is highly auspicious to surrender to her with undivided devotion.
